Facing in or out?

4/12/2011

Yikes, it's been awhile since I've posted last! Life has gotten busy and business is booming, so I can't complain! I came across this article about whether we should wear babies facing in when we have them in a carrier. It talks about the development of the baby and why facing in toward the caregiver is very important.

http://ergoparent.com/2011/02/facing-in-facing-out-a-science-based-view-on-baby-carrying-positions/

As you can see from the article, facing in toward the caregiver's body is really the way that babies should be worn most of the time. Some people recommend never having baby facing out, but I know a lot of parents want to to be able to do that as I get a lot of questions about that. I usually recommend that if caregivers want to have their baby facing out, they need to take some things into consideration.

First, as the article mentioned, it is important to make sure the baby's legs are in an ergonomic position as can be achieved with most properly designed baby carriers and all the ones I sell. They should not be danging from their crotch, but should be in a seating position.

Second, as mentioned, babies can't take cues from their caregiver's faces when in social situations, but also, something the article didn't mention, is that babies have no place to turn away from overwhelming stimuli when they're facing out. So the caregiver needs to be aware of the mood of the baby and make sure to turn them back around to face their body if baby gets too overwhelmed by the social situation.

Also, the article doesn't mention that when baby is facing out, the baby is not in line with the babywearer's center of gravity, so they will find it uncomfortable for long periods of time as baby is just hanging off the front of them. Another thing to consider, especially with an older baby is that now you have two arms and two legs that can reach a lot of stuff when directly in front of you, so beware! Hope that clears up some of the questions. So if you want to wear your baby facing out, after they can hold up their head, go ahead, but do so sparingly and make sure you take these things into consideration. Happy Babywearing!

Shutterfly Christmas cards

12/6/2010

Once Thanksgiving was over, I started thinking about Christmas cards for this year. I usually just get the cheapest cards I can get at WalMart, but this year I came across a promotion that Shutterfly is doing where we can get 50 free cards just for writing about our favorite card on our blog! If you have a blog and want to get some free Christmas cards, you should check it out.

I LOVE getting photo cards from our friends because I get to see how big their kids are getting, how much they've changed, and to see any new additions to the family. We've sent out a photo for Christmas every year we've been married starting with a wedding picture that first Christmas. The next year was us is our first apartment and the following year we got to announce the birth of our daughter with our photo card! Since we had December and January babies, both of the years our kids were born, we combined our Christmas cards with birth announcements and made it a New Year's card.

I'm so excited about this promotion because Shutterfly has soooo many cute options for cards. Go here to check out their new collection of Christmas cards.  I love that they have so many options for cards that say "Merry Christmas" since Christ is the reason for the season. They also have traditional cards and more modern styles too so there's something for everyone. It's going to be hard to pick! I'm taking the kids' Christmas picture this Friday, so I guess the card I decide will depend on what kind of pictures I get. I think this is my favorite for now but that may change:

Since we took a family picture for Junior's birth announcement, we decided to just take the kids this year since we haven't really changed. :)

I love the fact that they have so many options for cards that you can put more than one picture on. We used this one for Junior's birth announcements and it was nice to not just have one picture.

You can go here to see all the options they have for birth announcements.

In case you're looking for gift ideas, you can make a photo calender with your own personal pictures for each month. My friend did this for her mom and it was really cute! And the same friend also made me an awesome photo book for my birthday with our own pictures that was a complete surprise!

Now I just have to get the kids (and my camera) to cooperate so I can get great pictures! Have fun making your Christmas cards!

We're in the news!

We've been featured in the Sunday online edition of our local newspaper about babywearing! It's a well-written article written by a friend of mine's mom and I love the fact that she focused on how safe wearing your baby is. In the wake of the recall of the extrememly dangerous Infantino SlingRider (that's for another post) there has been a lot of negative press in the media about babywearing. So it's great to have positive articles about babywearing. Hopefully we'll be instrumental in helping some more moms and dads wear their babies and maybe even get a little business too. ;) Here's the link to the article:

Are you a Lactivist?

Ok, a friend posted this blog post on facebook and I laughed so hard! I couldn't check all of these things on the list, but there were more things on this list than I'd care to admit, LOL! And being a La Leche League Leader (guilty) or thinking about becoming one isn't even on there! Guess I'm a lactivist too! This blog really doesn't need any more explaining:

(Guess the fact that my first two real blog posts were about breastfeeding might give something away, huh?) :)

Outrageous!

As I mentioned in my last post, this blog is going to be a random conglomeration of things since as you can see from my description of myself, I wear many hats. Sometimes you'll get the fun and cute things my kids are doing, sometimes I'll post about various topics related to babywearing, breastfeeding, birth, cloth diapering, etc. and sometimes like this post, I will be venting about things I hear in the news or on facebook that I think are ridicuous, outrageous or need to be changed.

So tonight someone posted on facebook about a group that was started when two women (and their 6 children) were thrown out of a McDonald's in Arizona and then threatened with calling the police when several people complained that one of them was breastfeeding their baby. Here's the link if you want to check out the details: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=139416576097533

Seriously?!? You have got to be kidding me! What the heck is sooo offensive about people breastfeeding in public? As the person who posted the link said, "If you don't like it, don't look!" I remember a story I read in one of my La Leche League (a breastfeeding support group for those who don't know) magazines about a mom who was with her father, I think in a train station, and she was nursing her baby while waiting for the train. Obviously her father had been around her while she was nursing before, but he remarked that the older gentleman sitting close by might be offended and maybe she should cover up. She happily replied, "Oh, he's more than welcome to move, I'm quite comfortable where I am!" I thought that was the best response! If people are offended by someone nursing in public, they should move or not look. Women should not be made to feel ostracized or feel like they have to sit in a dirty public bathroom to nurse their baby. Would you want to sit in a dirty bathroom to eat your dinner?

My family and I have spent many hours at the local waterpark this summer where my favorite pasttime, while nursing the baby in public - he, he ;), is people watching. And oh, boy are there some people to watch! To give you some perspective of the clientele of said waterpark, my husband often jokes that he feels left out because he doesn't have a tatoo. I would like to tell a lot of them "Ok, just because you can wear a bikini, doesn't mean you *should* wear one." or "Does anyone else think that's attactive?'Cause really, not so much." There are some people that are just not meant to wear bikinis. And I stop and think - there are people there who are doing the best they can to show off as much skin as possible (and then some!) and nobody kicks them out of the waterpark! What has our society come to that people can walk around with nothing but a triangle of fabric covering their nipple and we can have half naked women plastered on billboards and yet people get offended when a women is nourishing her child with her breast. That's what they were made for, people!! It's really sad too that so many people find breastfeeding in public to be "disgusting" as I've heard it quoted because we would have a lot more breastfed babies if women would encouraged to nurse wherever they were and not made to feel ostracized.

I personally have never been asked to leave or cover-up or really had any negative comments made to me when I'm breastfeeding in public, but I know people who have. I had a friend get offered a sweaty towel to cover her baby's head with! Eww! I'm surprised I haven't yet, since I nurse everywhere, and I've been nursing for over three and a half years now. Though my grandma was "embarrassed for me, because people might be looking," (at which point, my aunt who has nursed five children including twins chimed in that it was too bad for them and the baby needs to eat!) I am a very discreet nurser in public, though I am not one to use a "hooter hider" because I think that just draws more attention to yourself. No offense to anyone who uses one, but I think it's like putting a big Bulls-Eye over your head and saying "Yoo hoo, here I am, look at me, I'm nursing!" And it just brings more stares. Usually people have no idea what I'm doing or just ignore me. I think the fact that I act like it's perfectly acceptable to be sitting on the floor among the clothes racks in Target nursing is part of the reason that nobody bothers me. And most of the time, nobody can tell what I'm doing anyway since I'm so discreet about it. I had a friend's husband get ready to look away when he knew I was going to sit down and nurse my daughter and then he had to do a double take because all of sudden I was nursing and he didn't even see me get her latched on. He said I was "the most discreet nurser he'd ever seen." My favorite though, is when people walk up to me and want to talk to the baby and don't realize that she/he is nursing until they're about a foot away and then they get this really embarrassed look and stutter and back away. It's really funny to watch! :)

In case you were curious, here is a link to the breastfeeding law in Illinois on The National Conference of State Legislature website:

http://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=14389

Women in most states, including Illinois, have the right to breastfeed their baby anywhere they otherwise have the right to be, public or private. However, Illinois is actually one of only two states that places some type of limitation on breastfeeding in public. While women do have the right to breastfeed their baby anywhere they have the right to be, they can be asked to leave if they are in a place of worship and not following the "norms appropriate within that place of worship." So the only person that can tell you you can't nurse where you are is your pastor/rabbi/priest, etc. or a member of the staff. So be extra discreet while in church (which you should do anyway), and otherwise, nurse away! And if anyone other than the above mentioned people ever asks you to leave, stand up for yourself and the rights of breastfeeding women everywhere.

Well, this post is getting quite long, so I'm going to sign off. Hope you enjoyed my take on breastfeeding and feel free to leave comments. And be careful, if my baby looks like he's sleeping, don't get too close, he's probably nursing. ;)

Ok, Ok, I finally started a blog!

After much cajoling/nagging/arm twisting by my family (especially my brother), I finally decided to start a blog. Not that I think anybody is actually going to read it, but because my sister is a missionary in Thailand for the next two years and we wanted a way for her to keep up with what is going on with our family and our growing kids. It is also going to be a place for me to post about topics such as babywearing, breastfeeding, attachment parenting, homeschooling, cloth diapers, and anything that I decide is worth writing about. I guess I know a little bit about a lot of things and this will be a great place to share it. I may not post on a regular basis, but when I find something interesting or my kids do something funny, I'll put it on here. Who knows if anyone will read it, but at least my brother will stop bugging me.

For privacy's sake, my family will be known by the following aliases. You know who I am, but my dear husband will be known as Daddy-o (what my daughter used to call him), my 3.5 year-old daughter as Cinderella (her favorite princess) and my 5-month-old son as Junior (yes, he is actually a Junior!) If you know me IRL (in real life), I would ask that you use these aliases in any commenting you make on this blog. I think that's it for my first post. Please feel free to leave a comment if you actually read this so I can tell if anyone is actually reading. Thanks!
